EDITORIAL

In this project I was tasked to create an editorial piece about an article by the WWE on the effects of deforestation and forest degradation. They wanted the style of this piece to mimic "The New Yorker". They asked for both a website and a physical article in the style of a book. The words from the article were taken directly from an identical article by the WWE, but the layout and grapics were created by myself.

Mindmapping
I began this project by creating a mindmap to identify the main themes of the article and therefore have a better idea about how I should represent it graphically.

Idea Generation
After getting a good idea of the way I believed the article should be represented, I went into sketching up some vague ideas I had to get the creative process going.
Thumbnailing
Now moving on to thumbnail sketches, I was expanding on the ideas that I thought had the legs to work in a serious article like this one.

First Graphic
I first tried to use one of the six thumbnail sketches I had created above, but I couldn't find a way to make it work successfully, so I pivoted to a more barren image which I believed fit the tone of the article better. I then went into Adobe Photoshop to emphasise certain areas to add to the tone.
Second Graphic
Using similar techniques to the first image, I used Photoshop to merge two different images into one, creating a fade to gray. I also added some extra details, which sells the idea better that it was originally one image, and that it matches to tone more successfully this way.

'Creating' the Layout
Because this article is supposed to mimic the style of 'The New Yorker', There wasn't any previous ideation about the layout that I had to do. I simply looked for imagery for both their magazine/book layout and their website layout and took from that.
