SKETCH MAGAZINE
For this project I was asked to create a magazine rebrand for the brand of magazine called 'ISLAND'. They are an Australian company out of Tasmania focusing on arts and writing, and work from Australians.

I was asked to do a full rebrand for the name, layout and style, but the content was going to be the same from ISLAND Magazine Number 173.

Moodboards
I started by creating some moodboards that had both a similar-ish style to the original magazine, but also with some things changed and different which could inspire to take the magazine in a different direction. The first moodboard was about layout and typography, whereas the second one was about style, tone and colours.

Initial Concepts
After understanding the style and tone of the original magazine, as well as knowing the general direction of where I wanted to take the new design of the magazine, I started to create some initial concepts. These used articles in the magazine, but new layouts and styling. This was first and foremost a magazine to be read, so I wanted to emphasise that above all else, but its also an arty magazine, so it would still have some nice graphics and layouts.

First Refinement
With the first variation in mind, I wanted to push more colour into the design, whilst still focusing on the text primarily. I think I went slightly too far here with the colour and lost some of the focus on the colour.

Further Refinement
Again with another round of refinements and talking with the client, we came to this as the finished product. A style of imagery, colour and layout has been locked in, baring a few variations here and there to keep readers going.
